"Sweeney Todd" director Tim Burton — who just brought "Alice in Wonderland" to the world of 3-D — will next tackle a 3-D, stop-motion animated film based on Charles Addams’ beloved creepy and kooky family.
Chris Meledandri of Illumination Entertainment (part of Universal) has acquired the rights and will produce the film, Deadline New York reports. Kevin Miserocchi of the Tee and Charles Addams Foundation will serve as executive producer. No writer or other creative team members have been announced.
The Addams cartoons also serve as the source for the current Broadway musical The Addams Family by composer-lyricist Andrew Lippa and bookwriters Marshall Brickman and Rick Elice. Nathan Lane and Bebe Neuwirth lead the Broadway cast as Gomez and Morticia. The drawings, seen originally in The New Yorker magazine, also inspired the 1960’s televisoin series and two 1990’s feature films (in which Barry Sonnenfeld directed stars Raul Julia and Anjelica Huston).
