Will "Twilight" Star Robert Pattinson Be the Next American Idiot?

Friday, October 14th, 2011

Robert Pattinson, best known for playing Edward Cullen in the "Twilight" movie series, may test his vocal abilities on the big screen when American Idiot, the 2010 stage musical based on Green Day’s Grammy Award-winning album of the same name, is adapted into a film.

Green Day frontman Billie Joe Armstrong recently told celebrity blogger Perez Hilton that Pattinson is a possibility for the film, which is aiming for a 2013 theatrical release. When asked who he would like to see in a starring role, Armstrong said, “I’m gonna say that kid in ‘Twilight.’ He’s a good actor. There’s still more to come with that kid.”

Based on Green Day’s groundbreaking rock opera album “American Idiot,” the musical is about three suburban pals who take divergent paths in post-9/11 America.

American Idiot wrapped its run on Broadway earlier this year, closing April 24. The musical was nominated for the 2010 Tony as Best Musical, and won Tonys for its scenic and lighting design. The show also won the 2011 Grammy Award for Best Musical Show Album, plus a Drama Desk Award and an Outer Critics Circle Award.

Armstrong and American Idiot director Michael Mayer, the team who co-created the Broadway musical, will reunite to collaborate on the film.

  • Billie Joe Armstrong Gives Special Goodbye to Broadway and American Idiot (Video)

    Monday, October 4th, 2010

Green Day's Billie Joe Armstrong finished his week-long run as St. Jimmy in American Idiot, the musical based on the punk band's hit album, on Oct. 3, but not before penning a special goodbye, which he performed after his final bows.

Armstrong replaced original cast member Tony Vincent as St. Jimmy for the week of Sept. 28 when Vincent had to leave the show for family reasons. Armstrong’s run helped the show gross over $1 million that week. Vincent’s understudies, Joshua Kobek and Andrew Call, will alternate as St. Jimmy Oct. 5-10, until Vincent returns Oct. 12.

Audience-filmed footage of Armstrong performing his original song, “Goodnight New York,” at the final curtain call, along with the cast’s encore of Green Day’s “Good Riddance (Time of Your Life),” which is a traditional end to the show’s bows, is available below. These are the new song’s lyrics:

I left my blood like bullets over Broadway
The fire of the footlights at the St. James
With broken legs and roses over New York
These goodnight songs of long lost love and war
But I’m alive, I’m alive, I’m alive like suicide
    So goodnight, goodnight, New York
