Saturday, July 23rd, 2011

John Stamos, best known for playing Uncle Jesse on “Full House,” will soon make his way back to the stage when he performs as Corny Collins in the Hollywood Bowl’s production of Hairspray in Los Angeles.

Here, Stamos sits down on “Jimmy Kimmel Live” and talks about gearing up for Hairspray, which includes multiple sessions with his vocal coach. Stamos admits to Kimmel that he is not much of a singer and has a lot of work to do when preparing for a musical or guest-starring on the Fox hit series “Glee.”

In Hairspray, Stamos will join Tony Award winners Harvey Fierstein and Marissa Jaret Winokur, who created the roles of, respectively, mother Edna Turnblad and daughter Tracy Turnblad in the original Broadway company. The cast also includes Corbin Bleu (Seaweed), Drew Carey (Wilbur Turnblad), Diana DeGarmo (Penny Pingleton), Mo Gaffney (Prudy Pingleton, the Gym Teacher, the Matron), Nick Jonas (Link Larkin), Darlene Love (Motormouth Maybelle) and Tara Macri (Amber).

John Stamos To Get Musical Series After "Glee" Guest Spots?

Monday, August 23rd, 2010

Stage and screen star John Stamos has been talking to "Glee" executive producer Ryan Murphy about headlining a musical series after he finishes playing Will's (Matthew Morrison) rival for Emma's (Jayma Mays) affections on the show’s upcoming season.

Murphy revealed his plans to E! Online on the red carpet for the Creative Arts Emmys, at which he also confirmed that he is developing another musical series to star Stamos’ fellow stage, screen and “Glee” vet, Kristin Chenoweth.

Stamos, perhaps best-known for his television work on “Full House” and “ER,” has appeared on Broadway in Bye Bye Birdie, Nine, Cabaret and How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying.

Britney Spears "Glee" Cameo Confirmed; John Stamos to Appear in Episode, Too

Tuesday, August 10th, 2010

"Glee" co-creator Ryan Murphy confirmed that Britney Spears will be making a cameo on the upcoming episode devoted to her music.

Murphy told Ryan Seacrest on his Aug. 10 radio show, “I think Britney, 100 percent, is going to be on the episode.” He described the episode as “so reverential, so kind about her music.”

Zap2it.com also reports that stage and screen vet John Stamos, who is set for a recurring role on the Fox series’ second season as a dentist rival of Will Schuster (for Emma’s affections), will have a role in the episode as well. Seems Mr. Schuster (Tony nominee Matthew Morrison) is against the glee kids singing Spears’ songs, so when they visit Stamos in the dentist’s office and go under the ether, they’ll get to hallucinate the musical numbers. Spears will make her appearance in one of these dream sequences.

The episode is currently in production and will air this fall on Fox.

Set Breaks at Birdie, Stars Vamp

Thursday, October 15th, 2009

The audience at the Oct. 14 evening performance of Broadway’s Bye Bye Birdie at Henry Miller’s Theatre got a bonus show about 20 minutes into the first act.

Near the end of scene four, set in the MacAfee living room, a panel from a set piece at the rear of the stage fell off its frame.  Moments later, when panels and living room furniture were to have slid into the wings in a transition to a railroad station set, the living room pieces remained stubbornly in place.  The young actresses playing zealous Conrad Birdie fans made their entrance, gamely singing the Conrad Birdie song amidst the living room furniture, but as they finished, John Stamos appeared and waved them offstage, explaining the set problem to a raucous audience response.

Shortly after the curtain came down, Stamos emerged to vamp while the set issue was resolved. Pointing out his former “Full House” cast mate Bob Saget as well as comedy legend Don Rickles in the audience, he invited both to join him onstage.  Saget took him up on his offer and the two vamped for an additional ten minutes, with Rickles playfully heckling from the audience.  In addition to some off-color joking, Saget, noting all the texting going on in the front rows, remarked that this was “a Twitter moment,” which seemed to set off a new wave furious texting.

Gina Gershon emerged intermittently to provide status updates (and once appeared brandishing an autographed poster of a teenage Stamos) while Bill Irwin pitched in by reprising his “pulled under a curtain” routine from his clowning repertoire.

After being notified that the set problem had been resolved, Stamos and Saget cleared out and moments later, the curtain rose to reveal the correct train station set with the actresses playing Birdie fans in place.  When Stamos joined them onstage shortly after, with his character apologizing for being late, the audience erupted in laughter, and Stamos couldn’t suppress a laugh as well. The remainder of the show went on without a hitch.

Bye Bye Birdie opens Oct. 15.
