SYNOPSIS: In 1875, Philadelphia painter Thomas Eakins couldn’t sell his newest piece, The Gross Clinic. In 2008, Philadelphia purchased the painting for $68 million to keep it from leaving its rightful home. Mirroring two moments in history, American Canvas tells the fascinating story of Thomas Eakins through his personal relationships with the subjects he so carefully studied and rendered – all taking place in a country fresh from war, on the cusp of a new age of industry, and in the middle of a shift in social attitudes. Though he acquired reputations of a dangerous provocateur through his work, Thomas Eakins persisted in idolizing the naked and natural, understanding – before any of us – the truest beauty lies in the subjects we choose not to see.
