Review:
Chevy Chase once worked at the door, and still comes in with his family. His portrait is one of the 1,000 or so caricatures that decorate nearly every spare inch of wall space on three of the restaurant's four floors. Since 1921, this place has been a tradition for theater people, including cast members who come in on opening night to toast their doings on stage before the reviews come out.
This restaurant is as much a part of Broadway as the musical, the Richard Rodgers Theater, Duffy Square. We had called ahead and mentioned that we'd be with a friend whose likeness adorns the wall, and when we arrived found that his picture had been moved up to the captain's stand, along with those of Chicago's Bebe Neuwirth and Karen Ziemba, who had confirmed her position as a Broadway star the previous evening with the opening of Steel Pier. (We wondered if these two powerhouse performers were here as well).
While you'll be more than likely to see celebrities here -- pictured on the wall or dining at a nearby table -- another thrill at Sardi's is the pleasure of sitting down to an excellent meal at a place that is an unrivalled Broadway institution. Foodwise, you can choose from the old or the new, the light or the substantial. The Supreme of Chicken Sardi's is a casserole dish of tender chicken with cheese sauce, potatoes and fresh asparagus; there's steak tartare prepared tableside with anchovies, egg and chopped onions. And specials may include a fresh swordfish with sauteed scallops, Dover sole or roast pork. Lighter choices include burgers, sandwiches and salads.
Do not pass on dessert, particularly the warm apple tart with cinnamon ice cream, the rice pudding, traditional cheesecake or creme brulee.The menu, like the pictures on the wall is a winning collection of the familiar and fresh surprises.
