Kirk Douglas Theatre (Regional/National Tours)
In September 2003, construction began to convert the Culver, a 1940s "streamlined moderne" movie theatre, into a flexible midsize venue for live performance. Architect Steven Ehrlich and designers Sussman/Prejza & Company, Inc. restored and enhanced the building’s exterior, including the marquee and tower sign, glass-block windows, and horizontal roof overhangs. Also retained were original tile work, display cases, old-fashioned ticket kiosk, marble terrazzo floors.
Inside, Theatre Project Consultants helped configure an "end-stage" design, which allows every team of theatre artists to decide how to set the action of their play. The main seating area rises in a gradual rake from the stage and is surrounded by an intimate seating gallery. The maximum capacity is 300.
