Bentley III
Background: A resident of New York City for over 30 years, Bentley was first known for his New York theater reviews at Westchester's famed Peekskill Paramount Theatre in his New York hometown. There he reviewed such stars as Mimi Hines and Crystal Gayle. In recent years, his columns have appeared in newspapers from the East Coast to the Gulf Coast covering theaters as diverse as Carnegie Hall, Virginia's State Theatre-The Barter, Poughkeepsie's elegant Bardavon, Houston's Grand Opera, and Broadway's newest theater, The Little Shubert. When not working the New York theater scene,Bentley spends about half his time at a second home in Texas where his newspaper column "The People's Critic," offers reviews of various Houston area entertainment. Some of his favorite "assignments" have been reviews of the national concert tours of Itzhak Perlman, Cher, and Harry Connick Jr., in addition to wonderful performances of the Houston Symphony, Houston Ballet and numerous local productions. Performers such as Neil Sedaka, Van Cliburn, Art Garfunkel,Tommy Tune, Steve & Eydie, The Four Freshman,The Boston Pops,Lawrence Welk's Orchestra, Linda Eder, Phil Collins, The Ink Spots,Ricky Martin, k.d.lang, and Tony Bennett have all been favored with reviews from the watchful eye of The People's Critic.Bentley has also co-authored original short plays that have been produced by The Woodlands Symphony Orchestra (Texas) as concert introductions for young people.
Bentley holds a Bachelor of Arts degree (1966) from the University of Texas where he studied theater. An alumnus of Manhattan's American Academy of Dramatic Arts, Bentley also holds a masters degree in education from Brooklyn College. He was also a teacher for more than a quarter of a century at Brooklyn's renowned Isaac Remsen School. There, although not a trained musician himself, he was best known as the "Music Man" for his work developing elementary school music programs and productions for his students. Bentley is a member of the American Theatre Critics Association (ATCA), The International Association of Theatre Critics (IATC), and America's oldest theatrical fraternity, THE LAMBS, where he currently serves as editor of the club's magazine, "The Lambs' Script."
