Edyth Totten Theatre

In 1926, actress Edyth Totten produced her own theatre, designed by architect Paul C. Hunter and located at 247 W. 48th Street. The theatre opened with a production of the drama Secret Sands. A few years later, the theatre was renamed the President, and numerous name changes followed. In its final use, the venue presented Erwin Piscator’s Dramatic Workshop, but the intimate house of just 299 seats never managed to turn a profit. Neighboring Mamma Leone’s purchased the theatre in 1956 to expand their restaurant, and in 1988, the entire building was demolished.
