Playhouse Theatre

Producer William A. Brady introduced the Playhouse Theatre in 1911, designed by architect Charles A. Rich and located at 137 W. 48th Street. The theatre showcased many talents including Douglas Fairbanks in A Gentleman of Leisure and George Broadhurst’s Bought and Paid. The Playhouse presented Elmer Rice’s 1929 Pulitzer Prize-winning Street Scene. Later, when the Shuberts took over management, the theatre presented the famed production of The Miracle Worker, starring Anne Bancroft and Patty Duke. Before the theatre was demolished in 1969 to make way for an office building, the Playhouse Theatre was used as a location for Mel Brooks’ movie The Producers, starring Gene Wilder.
