The Broadway League, the national trade association for the Broadway industry, annually joins forces with The American Theatre Wing to present the Tony Awards, Broadway's biggest honor. As the 68th Annual Tony Awards draw near, Playbill.com asked The League to supply us with 10 facts about their organization.

10 The League's 700-plus members include theatre owners and operators, producers, presenters and general managers who present in nearly 200 markets in North America, as well as suppliers of goods and services to the theatre industry. Each year, League members bring Broadway to nearly 30 million people in New York and on tour across the U.S. and Canada.

9 Charlotte St. Martin joined The Broadway League as executive director in 2006. As Broadway is one of the leading tourist destinations in New York, she utilizes expertise from her former career in the hospitality industry where she spent nearly three decades with Loews Hotels.

8 The official source for Broadway data in NYC and around the country. Provides research and statistics for Broadway Grosses, Season Statistics, Touring Broadway and Research Reports on demographics and economics. The League’s Economic Impact Research Reports provide statistics such as: Broadway contributes nearly $12 billion to the economy of New York City on top of tickets sales and supports 87,000 local jobs.

7 The Broadway League first joined the American Theatre Wing to co-present the Tonys in 1967 in time for the awards’ first national TV broadcast, and have co-presented the Tonys every year since.

6 Broadway Salutes, in partnership with the Coalition of Broadway Unions and Guilds, was formed in 2009 to recognize veteran Broadway employees.

5 Kids Night on Broadway (kidsnightonbroadway.com) is an audience development program that introduces Broadway theatre to young audiences, allowing kids ages 6-18 to see a Broadway show for free with a full paying adult.

4 Spearheads education programs including Family First Nights to introduce economically at-risk families to Broadway in New York and around the country; Broadway Speakers Bureau to encourage high school and college students to explore non-performance careers in theatre; and the League Educator Apple Awards to recognize, reward and acknowledge the efforts of local schools and community groups that support League member organization/venue's education programs relating to Broadway or touring Broadway shows and promote further development of theatre education.

3 The Broadway League sponsors a grant program supporting 12 education and community engagement programs for Broadway and Touring Broadway productions each year. The program has to date awarded almost $1 million to productions and/or theatres in New York City and 48 cities across the country.

2 Broadway attendance for the 2013-14 season topped those of the ten professional NY and NJ sports teams combined (Mets, Yankees, Rangers, Islanders, Knicks, Liberty, Giants, Jets, Devils and the Nets).

1 The League was founded in 1930 as the League of New York Theatres. As our mission expanded, we became the League of New York Theatres and Producers, the League of American Theatres and Producers, and in 2007 The Broadway League. Today the League is a full-service trade association dedicated to fostering increased interest in Broadway theatre and supporting the creation of profitable theatrical productions.
