News 1998 Helen Hayes Award Nominations Announced in D.C. Nominations for the Helen Hayes Awards, which honor excellence in Washington DC theatre, were announced Mar. 23 at the Canadian Embassy in Washington DC. The awards will be given May 4 at the Kennedy Center.

Nominations for the Helen Hayes Awards, which honor excellence in Washington DC theatre, were announced Mar. 23 at the Canadian Embassy in Washington DC. The awards will be given May 4 at the Kennedy Center.

Among individual productions cited in multiple categories, two productions tied for the most nominations -- eight apiece -- Mourning Becomes Electra at the Shakespeare Theatre and Sunday in the Park with George, co-produced by Arena Stage and Signature Theatre.

In addition, Old Wicked Songs at the Studio Theatre received seven nominations. In the lead actress and actor categories, nominees include Tana Hicken in Arena's Ghosts, Kelly McGillis in the Shakespeare Theatre's Mourning Becomes Electra, Holly Twyford in Romeo and Juliet at the Folger Shakespeare Library, Patrick Stewart's Othello at the Shakespeare Theatre, Jason Patrick Bowcutt in Signature's Never the Killer and Ted van Griethuysen's Prospero in The Tempest at the Shakespeare Theatre.

In the category of outstanding supporting actress, Franchelle Stewart Dorn received two nominations, for Mourning Becomes Electra and for Othello. Also, Catherine Flye is "competing against herself" for best director of a resident musical: she was nominated for her staging of two shows at Interact,Down at the Old Bull & Bush and Sherlock Holmes and the Case of the Purloined Patience. In the non-resident (touring) show category, Rent and Chicago took three and four nominations, respectively, and Bring in 'Da Noise Bring in 'Da Funk took two.
