Pam Gems has been nominated for a Tony for her book for Marlene. Despite the brief tenure of Marlene, Gems has had previous success on Broadway. Her Piaf played during the 1980-81 season (after stints in London) and the Tony-nominated Stanley was well-received at Circle in the Square. Celebrities and historical personae are obviously Gems' specialty; her other plays include Dusa, Fish, Dash and Vi, Queen Christina and The Danton Affair. She's also adapted such classics as A Doll's House (1983), Camille (1984) and Uncle Vanya (1992).
