Herscher's own word for her multi-decade career in theatre is "matchmaker." She has matched writers with composers, producers with writers and musical scores with publishers. She began as a production assistant for
Make a Wish in 1951. She was general manager for
Hazel Flagg in 1953 and then associate producer for
Will Success Spoil Rock Hunter? Over the next four years, she general managed several shows and in 1960 joined the William Morris Agency as a representative for actors and playwrights.
From 1966-75, she headed the theatre department of the Edward H. Morris Company, music publishers. There, she was instrumental in the publication of such scores as Applause, Mame and A Chorus Line. Herscher subsequently headed the theatre department of G. Schirmer. -- By David Lefkowitz
