After receiving a leading 12 Tony nominations, the team behind Mean Girls sat down with Playbill to talk about what went right. It’s not easy to follow up a hit movie with a hit stage adaptation, but director Casey Nicholaw says he wanted to infuse the musical version with the glitz and glam of Broadway.
“It has to be different because they’re singing and dancing, but all of us wanted it to be entertaining and feel like a real Broadway show and have a lot of pizzazz to it but also a lot of heart,” he says in the video above. “Rather than being hit over the head with a message, to get a message while you're laughing, while you're being moved, that to me is everything.”
Book writer Tina Fey, who also penned and starred in the original film, as well as Taylor Louderman (Regina George) and Grey Henson (Damian Hubbard), spoke about being part of the Mean Girls family, as well as how they got their start in theatre in the first place. Turns out, even Fey has deep theatre roots.
