Tony Awards 25 DAYS OF TONYS: How Tony Nominee Alex Lacamoire Created Dear Evan Hansen’s Orchestrations from Pasek & Paul’s Pages The 2016 Tony winner and 2017 nominee exposes his process to finding the sound of the Tony-nominated Best Musical.

Last year, Alex Lacamoire took home the Tony for Best Orchestrations for his epic work on the generation-defining Hamilton. This year, Lacamoire is part of the smash of the season with Dear Evan Hansen.

“I don’t take it for granted,” Lacamoire says of being nominated in back-to-back years—on these two shows. “I know how much of yourself you have to give to make something that you’re proud of, to make something that has impact.”

So how did Lacamoire create the rich sound permeating the Music Box Theatre each night? “For me there’s an organic process to it,” he says in the video above. “Thankfully the music for Dear Evan Hansen was so expressive right out of the box that I knew what to do with it.”
