Anaïs Mitchell is a bit new to musical theatre. Though her Hadestown plays to sold-out audiences on Broadway, she first came to the story from the perspective of a singer-songwriter. Over the course of 13 years, the songs morphed into a musical, but Mitchell has always had theatricality in her bones.
“I grew up in Vermont and I used to be part of a solstice pageant that happened every year,” she says in the video above. “It was songs from around the world and poems and dances and usually people wearing masks and costumes.”
Now nominated for Tony Awards for her book of Hadestown as well as her score (the musical leads the Tony nominations with 14 total), she shared the musical that most impacted her, the song she’ll never get sick of (it’s from Hamilton!), and her quote to live by.
