Seventeen years after its initial release, the family-friendly film brought in a staggering $22,130,000 for the Sept. 23-25 weekend; the motion picture earned $29,300,000 the previous weekend.
Other top earners for the weekend just ended include "Moneyball" ($20,600,000), "Dolphin Tale" ($20,260,000), "Abduction" ($11,200,000) and "Killer Elite" ($9,500,000).
To date, "The Lion King" has earned $406,217,776 worldwide, according to boxofficeMojo.com. The Broadway musical of the same name plays the Minskoff Theatre.
