News 3-D Version of "The Lion King" Roars at the Weekend Box Office The 3-D version of Disney's "The Lion King," the animated film that spawned the Tony-winning Broadway musical, was the highest-grossing film of the Sept. 16-18 weekend.

Seventeen years after its initial release, the family-friendly film brought in a staggering $29,300,000 at the box office.

Other top earners for the weekend just ended include "Contagion" ($14,480,000), "Drive" ($11,019,000), "The Help" ($6,438,000) and "Straw Dogs" ($5,000,000).

To date, "The Lion King" has earned $369,941,776 worldwide, according to boxofficeMojo.com. The Broadway musical of the same name plays the Minskoff Theatre.
