News 79th Annual Academy Awards Nominations to Be Announced Jan. 23 Nominees for the 79th Annual Academy Awards will be announced Jan. 23 by Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences president Sid Ganis and past Oscar nominee Salma Hayek.

Nominations will be read live from the Samuel Goldwyn Theater at 5:30 AM PST. Ellen DeGeneres will host the annual Academy Awards, which will be presented Feb. 25. ABC-TV will broadcast the event live from Hollywood's Kodak Theatre beginning at 5 PM PST. The telecast will begin with a half-hour red carpet segment titled "The Road to the Oscars."

In a previous statement Academy producer Laura Ziskin said, "Ellen DeGeneres was born to host the Academy Awards. There is no more challenging hosting job in show business. It requires someone who can keep the show alive and fresh and moving, as well as someone who is a flat-out great entertainer. Ellen completely fits the bill. I can already tell she is going to set the bar very high for herself and therefore for all of us involved in putting on the show. Now all we need is a lot of great movies."
