Curitiba is a city in the south of Brazil, famous for its cultural and social structure. Theatre and cinema premieres and new projects are often organized and performed there before they are seen in Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro.

This year, the Fringe, the name given to the the event, includes innovation. Besides the usual presentation of official plays shown every year, the 1998 Festival offers a parallel opportunity for unofficial plays.

The producers of the Festival have selected eight of the best theatres in Curitiba to present plays at diverse times to cater to different audiences. Basic stage support and media marketing are made available to all the participants.

With this 1998 editon, the Curitiba Theatre Festival will bring to the Brazilian stage more than 180 plays. The complete program, (which will not be available to the public until January 1998) will include dates for debates to discuss points connected with theatre improvement in Brazil. There will also be free performances and book readings on the streets of Curitiba. For more information about the 1998 Curitiba Theatre Festival call 041 223 8919 in Curitiba - Parana
