Veteran casting director Lynn Stalmaster, who championed New York theatre actors for roles in Hollywood films, was awarded an Honorary Oscar at the annual Governors Awards, which were held November 12 in Hollywood. This is the first-ever Oscar presented to a casting director.

Films Stalmaster cast have included Inherit the Wind, Judgment at Nuremberg, Fiddler on the Roof, West Side Story, The Graduate, Coming Home, Tootsie, and The Right Stuff, among others.

Other Honorary Oscar recipients at the Academy’s 8th Annual Governors Awards included film editor Anne V. Coates, action film icon Jackie Chan, and documentarian Frederick Wiseman.

At the ceremony, Actors Branch Governor Laura Dern discussed how Stalmaster hired her from her first audition at the age of nine, calling the casting director “a champion… for a girl who could grow into a woman finding her own voice.” Bruce Dern added, “Every movie that was ever made was made with a casting director… he dared us to go out on the edge and take parts no other people would take.”
