Playwright Steven Dietz

From the playwright of More Fun Than Bowling, Ten November, The Last of the Boys, Honus and Me and Sherlock Holmes comes this new play, set in a crumbling New York bar, in which a young man grapples with questions "about his father's best friend, his mysterious past, and a stranger who knows much more than he should," according to Florida Stage. "Suddenly, he finds himself caught in a web of conspiracy theories surrounding the 9/11 attacks and outlandish hypotheses become dangerous realities."

Performances continue to June 21. Florida Stage is the Manalapan, FL, Equity company devoted to new American works (usually offering world premieres or second productions of plays and musicals). Florida Stage's production of Yankee Tavern is in the National New Play Network (NNPN) "rolling world premiere" program, which gives a single title a higher regional profile by being produced in separate productions around the country. The multiple productions allow the writer to continue to develop the work in different settings, if he or she chooses.

This NNPN flagship program is called the Continued Life of New Plays Fund (CLNPF). It supports three or more member theatres which choose to mount the same new play within a 12-month period. The result is a "rolling world premiere" through which the playwright "develops a new work with at least three different creative teams, for three different communities of patrons, ensuring the resulting play is of the highest possible quality." And, "with a minimum of three productions in a single year, the play attains the momentum it needs to join the repertoire of frequently-produced new American works."

As part of CLNPF, Yankee Tavern will also be produced by Curious Theatre Company (Denver, opening Sept. 10), Actors Theatre of Charlotte (opening Nov. 13), and New Jersey Repertory Company (Long Branch, NJ, opening April 15, 2010).

NNPN provides grants of at least $5,000 to each participating theatre.

To date, NNPN "has championed the continued life of new plays with a quarter million dollars in grants." Visit www.nnpn.org.
