A COVER STORY: "All the Colors of the Rainbow!" #PlaybillPride Takes Broadway By Storm

Broadway has always been at the crossroads of art and activism. This diverse thoroughfare of exceptional people and extraordinary stories has brought the defining issues of our time to the stage—leaving audiences, and the world, forever changed.

As Playbill embarks on its 130th year of chronicling the talent, the politics, the drama, the laughter, the tears, the music, and the dancing of this great industry, we want to celebrate the individuals of the LGBT community who have spent their lives enriching ours through art.

Playbill commences its 30 Days of Pride initiative with a historic change to our well-known logo on Playbill covers on and off Broadway: Throughout the month—correlating with Pride Week in NYC, San Francisco, Chicago, Houston, Toronto, London, Paris, Dublin, Barcelona and dozens of other cities around the world—our logo is bursting with the colors first designed in 1978 by Gilbert Baker, when he created the "Rainbow Flag," now synonymous with the LGBT community and its message of tolerance and diversity. Playbill.com will roll out stories focusing on the historic myriad of productions, both past and present, that have elevated our public discourse on vital issues that have faced lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people and our society-at-large throughout history.

We will celebrate the theatre’s pioneers and supporters of the cause, as well as the vital groups that serve the community, including Larry Kramer, Harvey Fierstein, Billy Porter, Rosie O'Donnell, George C. Wolfe, Dustin Lance Black, Laverne Cox, Lisa Kron, Joe Mantello, Tony Kushner, BD Wong, Jerry Mitchell, Jenny Kanelos, Rory O'Malley, Cyndi Lauper, Gavin Creel, Terrence McNally, Neil Patrick Harris, Avram Finkelstein, Leigh Silverman, Jonathan Groff, Family Equality Council, Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS, Broadway Impact, NYC Gay Men's Chorus, Hetrick-Martin Institute, True Colors Fund, Ali Forney Center, Lambda Legal, Pride Agenda, Center for Anti-Violence Education, VIVA Glam, Stonewall Community Foundation, and more.
