News Aida, Lion King, Constant Star, Floyd Collins, Tin Box Win South FL Carbonell Awards A resident Sunshine State staging of Floyd Collins won seven Carbonell Awards at the annual ceremony celebrating the best of South Florida's professional theatre scene.

The Adam Guettel-Tina Landau musical, produced by Actors' Playhouse in Coral Gables, FL, earned the most nominations of 34 productions nommed for 2003 Carbonell Awards. The show was a critical hit, but a box office dud in Florida, according to the Sept. 15 Carbonell nominations announcement.

The 28th annual Carbonell Awards ceremony was held Nov. 10 at Amaturo Theatre at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts.

The 2002-03 South Florida theatre season ended Labor Day.

One award was announced in September: The world premiere engagement of Nilo Cruz's Anna in the Tropics was excused from the Best New Work category to encourage consideration among other new shows.

(Tin Box Boomerang, billed as an introspective drama about trailer park trash, won the Best New Work Award.) Anna, whose world premiere was at The New Theatre in Coral Gables last fall, already has won The Pulitzer Prize and the American Theatre Critics Association's Steinberg New Play Award, and in currently playing Broadway (in a separate production that originated at McCarter Theatre in New Jersey).

Winners in the non-resident category were The Lion King and Aida actors Jeremy Kushnier and Paulette Ivory, and Lion King director Julie Taymor.

Productions in Resident Theatre categories must be "materially produced, cast, assembled and rehearsed" as well as originate at the host theatre."

A dozen theatre critics vote exclusively on Non-Resident shows; the Resident Theatre panel numbers 26, including theatre and arts community veterans and critics.
