Broadway has the Antoinette Perry Awards. London has the Laurence Olivier Awards. And, the Netherlands has the John Kraaijkamp Musical Awards. The Dutch equivalent of the Tonys and the Oliviers are awarded yearly to artists who exhibit "exceptional creative and artistic achievement."
Leading this year's pack with five nominations is the Elton John-Tim Rice musical Aida, which received nominations for Best Musical, Best Translation, Best Leading Actor, Best Leading Actress and Most Promising New Talent. The Dutch production of Aida is produced by Joop van den Ende, who co-produced the current, Tony-winning revival of Broadway's 42nd Street.
Stephen Sondheim's A Little Night Music and the Tony-winning Maury Yeston-Peter Stone musical Titanic both tied with four nominations. The Best Musical category comprises Aida, Nijntje, Saturday Night Fever and Titanic.
All nominations are decided upon by a jury, except for the Best Musical nominees, which are selected by readers of Holland's largest magazine "Kampioen." The awards will be presented during the RAI Congrescentre in Amsterdam on April 22.
