Off-Broadway News Aleshea Harris' On Sugarland Delays Off-Broadway Start

KiKi Layne is set to star in the Whitney White-directed production at New York Theatre Workshop.

New York Theatre Workshop's upcoming production of Aleshea HarrisOn Sugarland has delayed its Off-Broadway start by one day, with previews now set to begin February 3. The February 4 performance has also been canceled, with both schedule changes being made to allow for further technical rehearsals. Opening night is February 23, with the limited engagement scheduled to continue through March 13. For the latest, visit NYTW.org.

KiKi Layne (If Beale Street Could Talk) will star alongside Stephanie Berry, Thomas Walter Booker, Xavier Scott Evans, Mister Fitzgerald, Josh Fulton, Charisma Glasper, Kai Heath, Shemar Yanick Jonas, Billy Eugene Jones, Mariyea, Lizan Mitchell, and Adeola Role. Additionally, Caleb Eberhardt has replaced the previously announced Jacob Daniel Smith as Addis.

The new play from the Is God Is and What to Send Up When It Comes Down playwright follows Sadie (Layne) as she calls upon generations of matriarchal ancestors in search of truth about her own mother—on storied land that is now a southern cul-de-sac.

Obie winner Whitney White (SemblanceWhat to Send Up When It Goes Down) directs, leading a creative team that includes scenic designer Adam Rigg, costume designer Qween Jean, lighting designer Amith Chandrashaker, sound designer Mikaal Sulaiman, choreographer Raja Feather Kelly, and dramaturg Lauren Whitehead. The production will include music by Starr Busby, with Alfredo Macias serving as stage manager.
