News Alexander and Kaplan Premieres Will Be Part of Second Stage's 2009 Uptown Series The world premieres of Zakiyyah Alexander's 10 Things To Do Before I Die and Lila Rose Kaplan's Wildflower will be part of Second Stage Theatre's Uptown Series.

The Off-Broadway troupe's seventh annual summer festival lineup will feature two new plays by two women playwrights to be directed by female directors Jackson Gay and Giovanna Sardelli. The series runs May 12-Aug. 8 at the company's uptown home at the McGinn/Cazale Theatre.

Commissioned by the Time Warner Commissioning Program at Second Stage Theatre, Alexander's 10 Things To Do Before I Die will play May 12-June 14. The work centers on "Vida, a NYC high school teacher and Lena, a once-successful writer . . . two sisters who couldn't be more different," according to a release. "When a delivery of boxes from their recently deceased father arrives they must reconnect and re-examine their complicated history."

Gay (Len, Asleep in Vinyl) stages the work by Alexander (Sick?, The Etymology of a Bird and Blurring Shine). Opening night is slated for May 28.

Kaplan's Wildflower plays July 13-Aug. 8. The new work follows "a woman and her troubled son [who] look to escape their past in Crested Butte, a small town with its own share of secrets," as a release states. "They encounter a curious girl, a forest ranger, and an ex-drag queen. The five collide in a summer of botany and sexual awakening."

Sardelli (2008 Joseph A. Callaway Award for Second Stage Uptown's Animals Out of Paper by Rajiv Joseph) directs the play by Kaplan (Aquarium, Catching Flight and Chicken with Stars). Opening night will be July 30. The Second Stage Theatre Uptown Series was "created as a program to help develop and provide exposure for the voices of a new generation of theatre artists." Previous playwrights presented in the series include Rajiv Joseph, Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, Adam Bock and Brooke Berman.

Tickets to both plays at the McGinn/Cazale Theatre, on Broadway at 76th Street, can be purchased at the Second Stage Theatre box office (307 West 43rd Street) or by calling (212) 246-4422. For more information, visit 2ST.com.
