The musical, which has a book by Kevin Del Aguila and music and lyrics by Gary Adler and Michael Patrick Walker, was conceived by Marc Kessler and Ken Davenport. It is being presented in London by Paul Taylor-Mills Ltd., by arrangement with R&H Theatricals Europe.

In a press statement Taylor-Mills (who last co-produced the London premiere of In the Heights) commented, "I have been trying to secure a life for Altar Boyz for several years and am thrilled to be presenting it with one of the UK's most accomplished directors of new musicals, Steven Dexter. He is so wonderfully imaginative and I'm thrilled with the cast he has assembled, to be announced soon."

According to press materials, the show revolves around a fictitious boy-band on the last night of their "Raise the Praise" tour. The Boyz are "five all-singing, all-dancing heartthrobs – Matthew, Mark, Luke, Juan and Abraham – trying to save the world one screaming fan at a time. Their pious pop act – including lyrics like "Girl You Make Me Wanna Wait" and "Jesus Called Me On My Cell Phone" – worked wonders on the bingo hall circuit, but when fate brings them to New York, will the boyz take a bite out of the forbidden apple?"

Dexter's previous West End credits include the musicals La Cava, Romance! Romance and Loserville. He co-wrote the musical Maddie.
