News American Theatre Wing Announces New Grant Guidelines The American Theatre Wing is now accepting applications for its Theatre Company Grants; the organization also announced updated guidelines for the 2010 awards cycle.

In recent years only New York City-based theatre companies were considered for the grant, but this year’s application is open to nonprofit companies nationwide.

"The Wing has been working for several years both to recognize the word ‘American’ in our name, and to focus on those who aspire to or have begun working in the theatre," said ATW Board Chairman Theodore Chapin in a statement. "The Board of Directors believes ATW can have significant impact by identifying and supporting companies which are relatively new on the scene, offering seed money and recognition.  We believe that even in risky times, new artistic voices and organizations must be encouraged."

The $10,000 grants are intended to assist smaller theatre companies, in operation between five and fifteen years, with general operating support.  In addition, the companies must "have articulated a distinctive mission, cultivated an audience, and nurtured a community of artists in ways that strengthen and demonstrate the quality, diversity, and dynamism of American theatre," according to press materials.

The American Theatre Wing is most famous as the creator and co-presenter (with The Broadway League) of the annual Antoinette Perry “Tony” Awards. Since establishing the Theatre Company Grants 53 years ago, ATW has awarded approximately $3 million to emerging theatre companies.

The intent to apply deadline is April 1; final applications are due May 1. Grants will be announced in September. For more information or to apply online visit http://americantheatrewing.org/grants.
