The singer, who earned acclaim for her 2007 album "Back to Black," battled drugs and alcohol during a very publicized downward spiral, which resulted in her death at the age of 26 in July 2011.

The new musical, which is set to premiere Jan. 30, 2013, will incorporate Winehouse's actual words, compiled from interviews, awards speeches, concerts and various newspaper stories, letters and the singer's own songs. It will also include material Winehouse wrote and performed. 

The singer's family is not involved in the production.

Johanne Louise Schmidt will portray Winehouse in the play that explores "the enormous pressure a sensationalist public put on a young superstar when her problems began," according to presenters.

Winehouse also released the 2003 album "Frank." Her material ranged from R&B, pop-influenced songs like "Rehab," "F*ck Me Pumps" and "Stronger Than Me" to standards including "Someone to Watch Over Me," "There Is No Greater Love." She also recorded the jazz standard "Body and Soul" with Tony Bennett for his "Duets II" album.
