Doug Field's comic play, beginning Off-Broadway Dec. 4, is packaged "in a brisk hour-long television Christmas Special format" in which "Enola Gay Tibbets, the mother of the pilot of the infamous bomber who named his plane after her, is trying to clear her name."

According to production notes, "What better way than a feel-good Christmas show broadcast from the downstairs of her suburban Miami, Florida home? The show features her singing a little, cooking a little, decorating a little and doing a little cocaine.  She also has some very special guests — as well as one surprise guest!  The play is full of history, both factual and fictional — the basics are fact — and then the fantasy begins."

Dana Snyder directs. The two-actor play features drag performer June Bug as Enola Gay and Nan Schmid as several characters, including anti-gay activist and orange spokesperson Anita Bryant. Schmid, a Second City (Chicago) veteran, wrote Dahling!, based on the life of Tallulah Bankhead, seen in New York City three years ago.

Note to elf enthusiasts: An off-stage elf "provides appropriate and inappropriate theme music."

Playwright Doug Field is known to New York audiences for his hit comedy, Down South, which played Off-Broadway at the Rattlestick Theater in 2001, where it extended four times. Field's most recent play, Jeannie Fitzpatrick Is Angry, was a hit in Los Angeles, where it extended twice and starred veteran actress Carole Ita White ("Laverne & Shirley").  His other plays include C Cup and The Flower of Dubuque.

Performances play Dec. 4-28 at Altered Stages, 212 W. 29th St. at Seventh Avenue.
