News An Officer and a Gentleman Musical in the Works; May Reading Planned By-invitation-only readings of An Officer and a Gentleman, a new musical based on the film of the same name, will be presented in Manhattan May 13-14, according to a casting notice.

Gordon Frost Productions will produce the readings, which will be directed by Simon Phillips. An Officer and a Gentleman, which is based on the original screenplay by Douglas Day Stewart, features a book by Stewart and Sharleen Cooper Cohen and a score by Robin Lerner and Ken Hirsch.

The casting notice also states that an Australian production is planned for next season.

No official announcement about the musical has been made.

Taylor Hackford directed the 1982 film, which featured Richard Gere, Debra Winger, David Keith, Robert Loggia and Louis Gossett Jr. The motion picture won Academy Awards for Best Actor in a Supporting Role (Louis Gossett Jr.) and Best Music, Original Song ("Up Where We Belong").
