Playbill Mediterranean Cruise Guests Arturo Olmos

Playbill Travel guests arrived in Sorrento, Italy for a wonderful day of site seeing, excursions, and entertainment aboard Silversea’s Silver Dawn September 8. Guests had the option of enjoying tours in ancient Pompeii, the Isle of Capri, and the Amalfi Coast.

In Pompeii, our guests were guided through the ancient streets learning about the people and culture left behind following a catastrophic eruption of the nearby Mount Vesuvius in 79 A.D. Although the eruption covered wealthy in ash and pumice stone, it left the entire city remarkably preserved, allowing Playbill Travel to experience the majesty of what it was like more than 1,400 year ago while also taking in the sorrowful beauty left behind.

Guests could also enjoy a scenic ferry ride to the beautiful ‘Blue Island’ of Capri, after which they ventured to the villages of Ana Capri and Capri Town. From the famous Villa San Michelle to Monte Solaro, from the Augustus Gardens and the Marina Piccola, our travellers leisurely traversed the magnificent isle learning about its vast history and enjoying its shops and many seaside cafés.

Yet another excursion saw guests departing Sorrento for a spectacular drive along the coastline, which offered many views of the Italian Riviera on their way to Michelin-starred Quattro Passi Restaurant and Cellars for a tasting. The excellent wine cellar is carved out of tufa rock, and well stocked with fine Italian wines, which were paired with cheeses, bruschetta, and olive oil—likely the best aperitif available in all of Italy (according to us).

Back aboard the Silver Dawn, Broadway’s best and brightest stars delighted us. Our ship was treated to once-in-a-lifetime solo performances from Will Swenson, Gavin Creel, and Liz Calloway. Will showed off his guitar skills and gave our guests a taste of the eagerly anticipated upcoming Broadway show A Beautiful Noise, while also sharing stories of his family and some memorable auditions. Gavin thrilled with some of his favorite tunes, culminating in a rendition of Hello, Dolly!’s triumphant “When the Parade Passes By” after hilariously recounting a backstage story involving Bette Midler and a surprising gift of LPs from her personal collection—apparently she made no secret of having spent the weekend rummaging through her attic for the gesture. The incomparable Liz Calloway is treating our guests with an all-week residency, showering us with favorites like “Memory” and “You’ve Got a Friend.” Her inaugural concert included a very special song from The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas dedicated to the one and only [original Best Little Whorehouse in Texas director and choreographer] Tommy Tune, leaving the crowd in tears.
