André De Shields to Celebrate Haarlem Nocturne in 40th Anniversary Concerts | Playbill

Cabaret & Concert News André De Shields to Celebrate Haarlem Nocturne in 40th Anniversary Concerts

The 1984 revue, which was written by and starred Tony winner De Shields, celebrates music by the Black American diaspora.

Tony winner André De Shields will return to 54 Below February 20-24, 2024, for a starry celebration of his musical Haarlem Nocturne.

Haarlem Nocturne, which turns 40 in 2024, is a musical revue exploring the invaluable musical contributions made by Black Americans, with a mixture of old standards, 20th century hits, and new compositions intermixed.

Opening on Broadway in 1984 at the now-demolished Latin Quarter, De Shields had this to say at that time: “People are under the impression that artists aren’t supposed to think or be plugged into the bloodline of the country, the world-socially, politically, or otherwise. I take exception to that. We are not dummies and as for me, my work has to reflect more than just the obvious singing and dancing. I must take chances. Without risk there is no reason to do it. And when those risks result in opening doors, I like to leave them open so others can walk through.”

The concert will reunite De Shields with Haarlem Nocturne's original music director (and cast member), Tony winner Marc Shaiman, as the pair recreate sequences from the original show, tell previously unheard stories, and present an unexpected reunion or two.
