Andrew Rannells stopped by Late Night With Seth Meyers March 21 to discuss the release of his memoir Too Much Is Not Enough.
While Rannells has been on talking his book, which follows his life from childhood through his Broadway debut in Hairspray, around various talk shows, this was the first time we learned what actually happened the night the Tony nominee made his Broadway debut.
"I was the only new person to join that night, so for everybody is else, it was just a Tuesday in January. But for me, my dreams were coming true, so I was very excited and we got out onstage," he recalled. At the top of the show, for the opening number of "Good Morning Baltimore," "the curtain is supposed to fly up and we’re all there. And I am not religious, but I was like, ‘Thank you for whoever did this for me,’ but I closed by eyes—I was really trying to be present because I watched a lot of Oprah then—and then I opened my eyes and it was still black and I thought I died.
“This girl, Becky Gulsvig, was like, ’No the computer crashed, we have to start over,’” said Rannells. “And I was like, ‘What? That's a thing that happened on Broadway?!‘”
