A handful of stage favorites will appear in Netflix's upcoming Heartstrings, an anthology series with a country twist. Each episode of the eight-part series will be based on a song by music legend Dolly Parton.
Parton, recently named Person of the Year at the 2019 Grammy Awards, will appear in the premiere episode, inspired by her song "Jolene." Julianne Hough (Fox's Grease: Live) will take on the title role.
Future episodes include "These Old Bones" with Tony and Oscar nominee Kathleen Turner (currently onstage at the Metropolitan Opera in La Fille Du Régiment), "Cracker Jack" directed by Tony nominee Liesl Tommy, "Down From Dover" with Tony nominee and Scandal star Bellamy Young and Spring Awakening alum Camryn Manheim, and "Two Doors Down" with fellow Spring Awakening favorite and Smash's Andy Mientus.
Parton herself has some Broadway ties, having earned a Tony nomination for the score to the musical adaptation of 9 to 5 (now playing in the West End). She also starred in the film version of The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas.
