The project, written by Ben Ripley ("Source Code"), is described as a "character-driven legal franchise revolving around two women."
Bassett will play an unsympathetic New York lawyer who is suddenly faced with a health crisis, but will continue her practice with the assistance of a young attorney.
Sony TV will produce "Vanishing Point" with Deborah Spera, Maria Grasso and Ripley as executive producers.
Bassett, who has also been seen on Broadway in Joe Turner's Come and Gone, was nominated for an Academy Award in 1994 for her performance in "What's Love Got to Do With It." Her other film credits include "Malcolm X," "Boyz n the Hood," "Meet the Robinsons" and "Strange Days," among others.
