"Angels in America — The Opera," composer Peter Eötvös' adaptation of Tony Kushner's award-winning plays, will debut on PBS in 2006.

Part of PBS' "Great Performances" series, the opera was filmed for television by François Roussillon and staged by Philippe Calvario. No air date has been announced.

The cast of "Angels in America — The Opera" features Daniel Belcher as Prior Walter, Topi Lehtipuu as Louis Ironson, Omar Ebrahim and Julia Migenes as Joe and Harper Pitt, Donald Maxell as Roy Cohn and Barbara Hendricks as The Angel. The opera made its world premiere in 2004 at Paris' Théâtre du Châtelet.

Tony Kushner's stage works, Angels in America: Millennium Approaches and Angels in America: Perestroika won the Best Play Tony Awards in 1993 and 1994, respectively. The first half also won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama. The plays were later adapted for an HBO miniseries, which was directed by Mike Nichols.

Angels in America interweaves the stories of a gay couple split apart by AIDS; a Mormon couple separated by their secret fantasies; and a legendary lawyer fading into history.
