News Anne of Green Gables, the Musical, Returns to Toronto May 7-24 A new production of the popular Canadian musical Anne of Green Gables begins a commercial run at Toronto's Elgin Theatre May 7 before moving on to Prince Edward Island, where the show has been an institution for more than 40 years.

This is Anne's first production in Toronto in almost 18 years. Opening night is May 13.

The co-production is by Dancap Productions Inc. and The Charlottetown Festival, the Prince Edward Island company that annually stages the show based on the youth novel by L.M. Montgomery. The Toronto run lasts to May 24. Opening night is May 13. The Charlottetown Mainstage dates will be June 18-Sept. 26.

The musical about "freckle-faced Anne Shirley, with her fiery temper, passion for melodrama and penchant for misadventures" in the P.E.I. village of Avonlea is directed by Anne Allan, with musical direction by Donald Fraser.

Anne of Green Gables was written and composed by Don Harron and Norman Campbell, with lyrics by Elaine Campbell and Mavor Moore. Anne of Green Gables has played the Charlottetown Festival for 44 consecutive years.

"Anne is a part of Canada's DNA," stated Aubrey Dan, president of Dancap Productions, "and the entire family deserves to see this great musical. All of us at Dancap are very excited to bring this P.E.I. treasure to Toronto for all those who have not had the chance to experience this Canadian classic." Anne of Green Gables stars Amy Wallis as Anne Shirley, Janet MacEwen as Marilla Cuthbert, Sandy Winsby as Matthew Cuthbert and Sean Hauk as Gilbert Blythe. The company includes Robert Allan, Krista Blackwood, Robin Calvert, Alanna Chisholm, Dean Constable, April Cook, John Edwards, Gerrad Everard, Craig Fair, Ashley Fenster, Terry Hatty, Alana Hibbert, Zak Kearns, Kieran Keller, Glenda Landry, Wade Lynch, Andrew McAllister, Charlotte Moore, Julain Molnar, Laura Nason, Catherine O'Brien, Shawna van Omme and Ryan Wilson.

The performance schedule is Wednesdays at 2 PM and 7:30 PM; Thursdays at 11 AM (May 14) or 2 PM (May 21) and 7:30 PM; Fridays at 7:30 PM; Saturdays at 2 PM and 7:30 PM; and Sundays at 2 PM.
