PlayBlog Annie Baker's Double Rates a Critics' Circle First This year the New York Drama Critics' Circle created a brand-new citation for Emerging Talent and presented it to the most conspicuous new playwright in town: Annie Baker, who had two plays on display during the season Circle Mirror Transformation, which went several extra innings at Playwrights Horizons, and The Aliens, which is currently at Rattlestick. Both works were highly praised.

The 29-year-old playwright was clearly touched to be singled out by the organization. "This is such a huge honor — and totally terrifying because the other people being honored tonight, Viola Davis and Horton Foote, are truly great artists," Baker told the crowd assembled at The Algonquin on May 10. "I don't actually feel like I'm a great artist yet, but I hope to become one, and, during the rare moments when I'm not totally confused by self-doubt, I think I might have the potential to become one.

"Thank you for honoring that potential and for encouraging me. I just feel it's hard to get a production when you're a young playwright, and I feel so lucky I had two productions in one year. It's a crazy experience. . . so thank you so much. I'm so honored, and I promise never to leave the theatre for television."
