Classic Arts News Anthony Dean Griffey Makes New York Recital Debut With Previn Premiere Tenor Anthony Dean Griffey makes his New York recital debut at Carnegie Hall's Zankel Hall tonight, performing a program of 20th-century songs and a new cycle by the conductor and composer Andr_ Previn.
Griffey is joined by pianist Warren Jones, his frequent accompanist; the Fountain Ensemble; violinist Daniel Panner; and guitarist Johannes Tonio Kreusch. Previn makes a special appearance at the piano, accompanying Griffey in his own Four Songs.

Previn's songs are settings of two poems by the British poet Philip Larkin, "Is It for Now" and "To Write One Song,"and two by the American poet William Carlos Williams, "The Revelation" and "Ad Infinitum."

The program also includes three songs by Frank Bridge and song cycles by Charles T. Griffes, Samuel Barber, and Ralph Vaughan Williams. In addition, Kreusch has transcribed Coplands's Old American Songs, Set 1, for guitar and voice; he and Griffey give that arrangement its world premiere tonight.

An acclaimed soloist in opera and symphonic works, Griffey played Mitch in the 1998 world premiere of Previn's most ambitious work, the opera A Streetcar Named Desire, and has repeated the role several times. He is also well known for his portrayal of Lennie in Carlisle Floyd's Of Mice and Men, and for the title role of Britten's Peter Grimes.
