Ari Graynor (The Little Dog Laughed, The Performers, 2ST's Trust), Daoud Heidami (Bengal Tiger at the Baghdad Zoo), Jerry O'Connell (Seminar) and Erin Wilhelmi (The Great God Pan) star in the production, which plays Second Stage Theatre's uptown home, the McGinn/Cazale Theatre on Broadway at 76th Street.

Here's how American Hero is billed: "At a toasted subs franchise in the local mall, three up and coming 'sandwich artists' — a teenager, a single mom, and a downsized refugee from corporate banking — are perfecting the mustard to cheese ratio according to the company manual. But when their shot at the American dream is interrupted by a series of strange events, they become unlikely allies in a post-recession world. American Hero is a supersized dark comedy about life, liberty and the pursuit of sandwiches."

Other members of the creative team include scenic designer Dane Laffrey, costume designer Clint Ramos, lighting designer Jen Schriever and sound designer Jill BC Du Boff.

Created as a program to help develop and provide exposure for the voices of a new generation of theatre artists, Second Stage Theatre Uptown (Christopher Burney, curator and associate artistic director) seeks to "develop the skills of emerging playwrights, to provide early-career artists with the support of a major artistic institution, and to create new plays for the American Theatre. Each show has a limited rehearsal period, as well as a streamlined budget."
