After a six-month sold-out engagement at New York's HERE Arts Center in 2008, the result of two extensions, Arias with a Twist will play the Roy and Edna Disney/Calarts Theater in Los Angeles Nov. 18-Dec. 13.
Since its New York premiere, Arias with a Twist has also played numerous international engagements, including France's Via and Exit Festivals. Arias will also play Stockholm, Sweden Sept. 24-27.
As previously reported, Twist and Arias are also at work on a film of the production that was captured during its Manhattan run by producer Bobby Sheehan of Working Pictures for a future screen release.
"In this deliriously madcap fantasy revue, the soaring song stylings of drag artist Joey Arias are surrounded by an eye-popping theatrical extravaganza conjured by a team of puppeteers directed by the legendary Basil Twist," press notes state. "Channeling lurid celluloid dreams, macabre nightmares and bizarre premonitions on a stage transformed into a bigger-than-life cabinet of curiosities, the adventure begins with an alien abduction and concludes with a stupendous Busby Berkeley-esque finale."
The music-filled production boasts Arias' uncanny Billie Holiday-inspired vocals on such songs as "Kashmir," "Jungle of Eden," "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds," "Withink You Without You," "I'll Take it to My Baby," "All By Myself," "Lately," "You've Changed," "Twisted" and "Ooh, What a Feelin.'" Credited with turning drag into high art, Joey Arias returned to New York in Arias with a Twist following an extended run headlining the Las Vegas production of Cirque du Soleil's Zumanity. An award-winning puppeteer, Twist has been announced to create puppets for the upcoming Broadway musical The Addams Family.
Arias with a Twist began performances June 12, 2008, and following a flurry of critical praise (including a rave from the New York Times) the production was twice extended, concluding Dec. 31, 2008.
Arias with a Twist features costume concepts by Thierry Mugler, costume execution by Chris March, musical arrangements by Elliot Douglass and Jean-Francois Houle, musical production by Jean-Francois Houle, sound design by Greg Duffin, lighting design by Ayumu "poe" Saegusa and video design by Daniel Brodie. Alex Gifford penned original songs ("Lately" and "The Jungle of Eden").
The soundtrack for Arias with a Twist was recorded during a live performance in September and is available by visiting AriaswithaTwist.
