The Madrid premiere of Art , the comedy written by Yasmina Reza which won the Tony and New York Critics awards in the United States and the Oliver award in the United Kingdom, took place Sept. 29 at Teatro Marquina.
The play was adapted, produced, and directed by the Spanish actor Josep Maria Flotats. In the cast is Flotats himself, Jose Maria Pou and Carlos Hipolito.
Art was scheduled for opening in Barcelona in March 1995, but diverse administration problems have provoked a three-year delay. In the Spanish version, Flotats has kept the spirit of the play alive, but changed the place of action from Paris to Madrid.
The play traces the problems that arise between three friends when one buys an expensive, completely white abstract painting. Reza herself attended the opening night of the Spanish version of Art .
Art runs at Marquina Theater at 1 Prim Street, Madrid. For Tickets: El Corte Ingles: 011-34-902-400-222. Subway Station: Banco Espana.
