The New York premiere of Julia Cho’s Aubergine, directed by Kate Whoriskey, officially opens September 12 at Playwrights Horizons. The playwright’s newest work, which began performances August 19, is a play about our connections to the food we eat, family, love and grief.

The cast features Michael Potts (Grey Gardens; The Book of Mormon; The Wire), Tim Kang (The Mentalist, The Vampire Diaries), Sue Jean Kim (Assistance, The Drunken City), Jessica Love (The River, The Snow Geese), Stephen Park (The Mindy Project, Person of Interest) and Joseph Steven Yang (Aubergine at Berkeley Rep, Eden, Deface).

Playwrights Horizons bills Cho's work as a poignant and lyrical new play, wherein “the making of a perfect meal is an expression more precise than language.”

“A man shares a bowl of berries, and a young woman falls in love,” read production notes. “A world away, a mother prepares a bowl of soup to keep her son from leaving home. And a son cooks a meal for his dying father to say everything that words can’t.”

The limited engagement is scheduled to play through October 2 at Playwrights Horizons’ Mainstage Theater. The production features scenic design by Derek McLane, costume design by Jennifer Moeller and lighting design by Peter Kaczorowski. Production stage manager is Cole P. Bonenberger.
