Theater luminaries Barbara Cook and Irene Worth will appear as part of the New York Public Library of the Performing Arts 1998-9 season of free public programs. All the events will take place in the Great Hall of Greenwich Village's Cooper Union (7 E. 7th St.), and admission is free.

Musical and cabaret star Barbara Cook will begin the series with a master class on Oct. 25. The veteran of The Music Man and Candide will instruct students from New York music conservatories.

Irene Worth will present two programs. The first, "A Tribute to Ellen Terry," will take place on Oct. 26. Worth will perform excerpts of parts which made the 19th-century actress a star.

On Nov. 2, Worth -- the original star of T.S. Eliot's The Cocktail Party -- will perform "Rehearsing with Mr. Eliot," featuring selections from the play and reminisces about working with the famous poet.

In other NYPL events, Zoe Caldwell will take the stage Nov. 9. The four time Tony winner will talk about her career and perform scenes from her most acclaimed roles. Finally, playwright Paula Vogel will talk about her career on Jan. 11, 1999. Vogel is the author of How I Learned to Drive and The Baltimore Waltz, among other works. She won the 1998 Pulitzer Prize for the former.
