News Baz Luhrmann and Stephen Adly Guirgis Collaborating on Hip-Hop Television Project Academy Award-nominated director Baz Luhrmann, who will soon stage the Australian musical adaptation of Strictly Ballroom, is at work on a new dramatic television series with Tony Award-nominated playwright Stephen Adly Guirgis, according to New York Magazine.

Known for the visually-arresting films "Moulin Rouge" and "The Great Gatsby," as well as the 2002 Broadway production of La Boheme, Lurhmann is working with producer Shawn Ryan ("The Shield") and Guirgis (Motherf**ker With the Hat) on a new period drama that will explore the dawn of the hip-hop era.

Penned by Guirgis, the music-filled series will tell the story of five young New Yorkers. According to New York Magazine, the first season will likely take place in 1977 at the peak of disco.

Lurmann and company have pitched the project to such on-demand companies as Amazon and Netflix, as well as FX and Showtime.
