Stephanie Hsu has unveiled the Broadway Debut Quilt, which honors the actors and behind-the-scenes people marking their first time on the Great White Way.

The idea came to Hsu after she realized that, because the cast of Be More Chill were all considered principal cast members, there would be no Legacy Robe ceremony to celebrate the ensemble member who had appeared in the most Broadway shows, an opening night musical tradition.

And so the Broadway Debut Quilt was born, comprised of strips of fabric from shows on opening night, one strip for each performer and technician making their Broadway debut. After Be More Chill, the quilt grew to include Hadestown, Beetlejuice, What the Constitution Means to Me, Oklahoma!, Tootsie, Ain’t Too Proud - The Life and Times of the Temptations, and Kiss Me, Kate.

"A lot of times we talk about success in terms of ladders, we talk about how many you’ve done, which is important, but also just to even make it to Broadway and just to do one show once is a huge deal," said Hsu. The Be More Chill star added this quilt "honors the entire environment of Broadway, not just musicals."

Watch Hsu show off the quilt and share its origin story above.
