The Unicorn Theatre in Kansas City, MO, is one of the first theatres outside of New York City to stage Douglas Carter Beane's Off Broadway hit, As Bees in Honey Drown,, Dec. 4-Jan. 3. Scott Coulter plays Evan Wyler, a writer seduced by the style of the Auntie Mame/Sally Bowles-like Alexa Vere de Vere, played by Cheryl Weaver. Bob Kohler, Missy Koonce, Cinnamon Schultz and Darryl Stamp round out the cast of Douglas Carter Beane's satire of celebrity.

First staged by New York's Drama Dept., the play transferred to the Lucille Lortel Theatre for a healthy run. In KC, Unicorn producing artistic director Cynthia Levin directs the comedy.

The official Unicorn opening is Dec. 4 following previews Dec. 2-3.

Unicorn, which offers Off-Broadway fare to Kansas City audiences, has a tradition of staging "non-holiday" fare, like last year's parody of Dickens, The Salvation of Iggy Scrooge.

The Unicorn is at 3828 Main Street in Kansas City. Tickets are $17.50 $20. For information, call (816) 531-7529 (extension 10).

The rest of Unicorn's season includes Jez Butterworth's Mojo, Jan. 20-Feb. 14, 1999 and Paula Vogel's How I Learned to Drive, March 10-April 14, 1999. Still to be decided are the National Playwright Award production (April 21-May 9, 1999) and the Hot Spot selection (June 2-27, 1999).
