Marc Bruni (Pipe Dream, Ordinary Days, Old Jews Telling Jokes) will helm the mid-April reading. Rehearsals will begin in early August for an out-of-town engagement that will precede a 2014 Broadway run. Broadway rehearsals will begin in January 2014.

As previously reported, Paul Blake and Sony/ATV Music Publishing are producing the musical that has a book by Academy Award nominee Douglas McGrath, who collaborated with Woody Allen on the screenplay for "Bullets Over Broadway." He also penned "Infamous" and "Emma."

Beautiful will depict King from the age of 16, in the years just before her songwriting career began, up to the age of 29 when she released her record-breaking album "Tapestry." Characters also featured include King's first husband and collaborator, Gerry Coffin; musical collaborators Cynthia Weil and Barry Mann; Brill Building hit-making producer Donny Kirschner; and King's parents, Genie and Sid.

The production will also incorporate musical icons The Shirelles, Eydie Gorme, Little Eva & Big Mamma Thornton, Neil Sedaka, Dick Clark, The Drifters, The Righteous Brothers and The Animals.

"What's so great about this for me is that musicals were a major influence on my songwriting," King said in an earlier statement. "In fact, when Gerry and I first met, we made a bargain that I would write music for the Broadway show he wanted to write if he wrote lyrics for my rock 'n' roll songs. The songs took off, and the show idea never came to fruition. Now that our songs have merged with a Broadway show, we've come full circle." Here's how the creators bill the musical: "Long before she was Carole King: chart-topping music legend, she was Carol Klein: Brooklyn girl with passion and chutzpah. She fought her way into the record business as a teenager and, by the time she reached her twenties, had the husband of her dreams and a hot career writing hits for the biggest acts in rock 'n' roll. But it wasn’t until her fairytale life began to crack that she finally managed to find her true voice. Beautiful tells the inspiring true story of King's rise to stardom, alongside husband and co-writer Gerry Goffin and fellow song writers Barry Mann, and Cynthia Weil, set to the music that made her one of the recording industry's most enduring icons."
